Straight Out The Salon

England Lost To Australia

Forlorn England Coach Lancaster

Yeah, I called last night's result, but it was a no-brainer. In a previous post I predicted England would lose and get dumped out the World Cup. You only need look at Lancaster and his record at the England helm to see he's not up to the job.

It's not only in the results, it's also in his body language. He exudes the body language of a loser. Arms folded, to shield against the external world. Po-faced look at all times. I do not recall seeing him smile in any photo or interview. Honestly, I haven't seen that many, nevertheless, you'd expect a solitary smile.

Look at the Aussie coach Cheika, last night. Look at Wales coach Gatland, or the New Zealand coach Hanson. Their positive body language is strong, filled with resolve and a determination to win.

Lancaster may be a smashing guy, but that's not what you need in sport. You need winners. Lancaster has the look of a loser. It's not difficult. Answer this question: "Would Lancaster be appointed Head Coach of New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, France?"

I don't understand English sport hierarchy's fixation with selecting losers to head up national teams. Forget patriotism, select the best coach your money can buy. Selecting home grown losers is a recipe for spectacular failure.

The England football team coach, Roy Hodgson, is another example of failure waiting to happen. Before Hodgson, we had McClaren, Keegan, Hoddle, Taylor.

Hire Australian, South African, Argentine, Brazilian, Spanish, Portugese, or Germans. Go for the best in each sport. If your goal is to win, appoint the best coach, irrespective of nationality.

England v Australia World Cup Rugby

England Lose Again

E ngland play Australia this evening, 8.00pm UK time. It's a must win game for England, but England will lose. Australia will thump England. England will be dumped out the competition. Home advantage will not play an important part in the game. It's simple. England are not good enough.

England have good players, but lack a World Class coach. Lancaster is not up to the job of producing a World Cup winning team. He's not capable of winning anything. Since Lancaster became coach, England have been runners-up or lower, in every competition in which they competed.

England lack 'grit', resolve, and the killer instinct. Australia, Wales, and New Zealand rugby teams have it in spades.

Lancaster lacks 'grit', resolve, and the killer instinct. Look at his face during and at the end of a game. If you don't know despondent, look at Lancaster for clarification.

Liverpool Is 5th Least Happy Place To Live

The Cause Of Liverpool Woes

T here's a story about the 10 happiest places to live in the UK, on i100 website from The Independent newsgroup. In the same article, it also includes a story on the 10 least happy places to live in the UK.

Liverpool came in at number 5 for miserable habitation.
I know the reason people in Liverpool are so unhappy, right now. It's because Brendan Rodgers is still manager of Liverpool FC.

Liverpool will move out the list when Fenway Sports appoint Jurgen Klopp as the new Liverpool manager. Liverpudlians will joyfully throw their hats in the air, when the Northern Irishman has been shown the exit door. Rodgers has proven again, he's not up to the task of running a 'big' club, at this point in time. Maybe one day, but definitely not now.

Give Klopp a call and see if he can start before Xmas. Given enough time, Klopp may save Liverpool FC, from another disastrous season.

Hamlet - Act V Scene I

The Graveyard

H AMLET
Let me see. [Takes the skull] Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio: a fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy: he hath borne me on his back a thousand times; and now, how abhorred in my imagination it is! my gorge rims at it. Here hung those lips that I have kissed I know not how oft. Where be your gibes now? your gambols? your songs? your flashes of merriment, that were wont to set the table on a roar? Not one now, to mock your own grinning? quite chap-fallen? Now get you to my lady's chamber, and tell her, let her paint an inch thick, to this favour she must come; make her laugh at that. Prithee, Horatio, tell me one thing.

HORATIO
What's that, my lord?

HAMLET
Dost thou think Alexander looked o' this fashion i' the earth?

HORATIO
E'en so.

HAMLET
And smelt so? pah! [Puts down the skull]

HORATIO
E'en so, my lord.

HAMLET
To what base uses we may return, Horatio! Why may not imagination trace the noble dust of Alexander, till he find it stopping a bung-hole?

HORATIO
'Twere to consider too curiously, to consider so.

HAMLET
No, faith, not a jot; but to follow him thither with modesty enough, and likelihood to lead it: as thus: Alexander died, Alexander was buried, Alexander returneth into dust; the dust is earth; of earth we make loam; and why of that loam, whereto he was converted, might they not stop a beer-barrel? Imperious Caesar, dead and turn'd to clay, Might stop a hole to keep the wind away: O, that that earth, which kept the world in awe, Should patch a wall to expel the winter flaw!

Hamlet - Act II Scene II

A Room In The Castle

I have of late—but wherefore I know not—lost all my mirth, forgone all custom of exercises, and indeed it goes so heavily with my disposition that this goodly frame, the earth, seems to me a sterile promontory; this most excellent canopy, the air—look you, this brave o'erhanging firmament, this majestical roof fretted with golden fire—why, it appears no other thing to me than a foul and pestilent congregation of vapors.

What a piece of work is a man! How noble in reason, how infinite in faculty! In form and moving, how express and admirable! In action, how like an angel, in apprehension, how like a god! The beauty of the world. The paragon of animals. And yet, to me, what is this quintessence of dust?

Man delights me not. Nor woman neither.

Why Is Modern Art So Bad?

Why Is This Guy So Right?

A n interesting perspective, by Robert Florczak of Prager University, on the decline in standards on what is purported to be, and often passed off as art. He's right!

Reading the comments below the video on YouTube, there's a lot of disagreement with Florczak. Why? Being confrontational, daring, counter-culture, or polemical does not make for great 'Art'. Its okay to like modern art, but to hold it up for close inspection, reveals the paucity of profundity, quality, refinement and inspiration.

Tracey Emins "Bed". Is it art? Some think so, and willingly pay millions. £2.2 millions ($3,379,860) to be precise. Its expressive. But is it great Art?

As with all forms, there is a high and a low, a good and a poor, a better and a worse. Guess where much modern art sits.

Killing Time Movie Poster

C ame across a great poster, for the movie Killing Time, but haven't seen the movie yet. Its only available on VHS at Amazon. I don't have a VHS player.

The movie rated poorly on IMDB only receiving a lowly 5.3 from critics with mixed reviews. Some loved it and classed it as Art-House or Indie / Concept. Others found the directing wanting, though the plot has potential. Guess I won't be seeing this one, unless it surfaces on cheap DVD release.

Greek Salad Recipe

A greek salad makes a wonderful side dish for any barbeque meat. It has a wonderful acidic flavour cutting the olive oil.

Here's a simple recipe that makes a great salad in minutes. If you have no romaine, you can use other lettuce leaves.

Ingredients

1 cucumber, chopped
2 plum tomatoes, chopped
1 red bell pepper, chopped
1/2 red onion, thinly sliced
150 g pitted kalamata olives
125 g brine-cured black olives
100 g feta cheese, crumbled
300 g romaine lettuce
salt and pepper optional

HIT Machine Triple Drop Set

A nother workout, similar to the dumbbell routine I posted on, recently. This one's for machines, using a similar protocol; working to failure on a triple drop set. Reduce the weight for 2nd and 3rd set by 5 - 10 lbs. Keep time between sets to a minimum, to maintain intensity.

A couple of exercises, such as dips or chins, don't use machines, a free-weight is used.

  • Start with a light warm up
  • First set aim for 8 - 12 reps
  • Use a weight to induce failure in 8-12 rep range
  • Reduce weight 5 - 10 lbs for next 2 sets
  • Take the last 2 sets to failure
  • If you reach failure in less than 8 reps, no sweat
  • Reduce weight quickly and progress to next set
  • Minimise time between drop sets
  • Alternatively work sets 2 & 3 without reducing weights

Split routine workout will balance over 2-weeks

HIT Dumbbell Triple Drop Set

W orkout for dumbbells if you can't get to the gym or the hotel does not have a full range of weight machines. Maybe you want to workout with dumbbells for a while to vary your routine or change your exercise sets.

One advantage of dumbbells over barbells; you can work single leg, single arm, one side of the chest of upper back, if its weaker than other side.

Suspend, Hibernate, Shutdown Difference

Suspend

S uspend does not turn off your computer. Suspend puts everything into RAM, and shuts off processes except to maintain memory, and detect start-up triggers.  It stops computer operations of all applications and peripherals, and puts the machine into a low-power mode. If the battery runs flat or the computer switches off, the current session and all unsaved changes will be lost. Various triggers can resume the machine state, by pressing a key or pressing and releasing the power button. Sometimes called 'sleep mode'.

Hibernate

Hibernate saves the contents of computer memory to the swap file on hard disk, powers off and shuts the machine down. When resuming, the saved state is restored to RAM. On machine by power up, the kernel reloads the memory contents from swap. To resume your previous session, press the power button, similar to a cold boot. No power is used when the computer is hibernating.

Oh no, please, please, let's hear about your childhood.

Dr Evil
Very well, where do I begin? My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink, he would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Some times he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy, the sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical, summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds, pretty standard really. At the age of 12 I received my first scribe. At the age of fourteen, a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum, it's breathtaking, I suggest you try it.

You know, we have to stop.

Introduction

T he ketogenic diet is a high-fat content diet in which carbohydrates are nearly eliminated so that the body has minimal dietary sources of glucose. Fatty acids are thus an obligatory source of cellular energy production by peripheral tissues and also the brain. Consumption of the ketogenic diet is characterized by elevated circulating levels of the ketone bodies acetoacetate, β-hydroxybutyrate and acetone, produced largely by the liver. During high rates of fatty acid oxidation, large amounts of acetyl-CoA are generated. These exceed the capacity of the tricarboxylic acid cycle and lead to the synthesis of the three ketone bodies within liver mitochondria. Plasma levels of ketone bodies rise, with acetoacetate and β-hydroxybutyrate increasing three-fold to four-fold from basal levels of 100 and 200 µmol/l, respectively (Musa-Veloso et al., 2002). In the absence of glucose, the preferred source of energy (particularly of the brain), the ketone bodies are used as fuel in extrahepatic tissues. The ketone bodies are oxidized, releasing acetyl-CoA, which enters the tricarboxylic acid cycle.

Rodgers To Be Sacked

Liverpool 2015 / 2016

My prediction for the new season:
Liverpool FC will achieve nothing. Probably finishing 5th, 6th or lower in the Premier League.

  • Liverpool will not qualify for the Champions League.
  • Liverpool will not win any cups.
  • Rodgers will be sacked.

Rodgers has spent an additional £77.5 million this year on mediocre talent and wasted another year achieving nothing.

Following his sacking, Liverpool's hierarchy will look to bring in Jurgen Klopp, after his one-year sabbatical.

High-Fat Keto Diet Induces A Unique Metabolic State

Excerpts - A High-Fat Ketogenic Diet Induces A Unique Metabolic State In Mice

These are excerpts. Go read the whole article:
http://m.ajpendo.physiology.org/content/292/6/E1724.full

Abstract

K etogenic diets have been used as an approach to weight loss on the basis of the theoretical advantage of a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet. To evaluate the physiological and metabolic effects of such diets on weight we studied mice consuming a very-low-carbohydrate, ketogenic diet (KD). This diet had profound effects on energy balance and gene expression.

C57BL/6 mice animals were fed one of four diets: KD; a commonly used obesogenic high-fat, high-sucrose diet (HF); 66% caloric restriction (CR); and control chow (C). Mice on KD ate the same calories as mice on C and HF, but weight dropped and stabilized at 85% initial weight, similar to CR. This was consistent with increased energy expenditure seen in animals fed KD vs. those on C and CR. Microarray analysis of liver showed a unique pattern of gene expression in KD, with increased expression of genes in fatty acid oxidation pathways and reduction in lipid synthesis pathways. Animals made obese on HF and transitioned to KD lost all excess body weight, improved glucose tolerance, and increased energy expenditure.

Parkinson’s Disease Is Irreversible

P arkinson’s Disease is a progressive, degenerative, irreversible condition for which there is currently no cure. Parkinson's Disease occurs due to damage and loss of brain cells.

The symptoms for Parkinson's begin slowly, but get progressively worse. These include tremors (shaking), slow movement, rigidity (stiffness), anxiety, dementia, memory loss and more. Parkinsons Disease UK has more details.

Remember, Parkinson's is progressive, degenerative and irreversible.

Browsing the web I came across:
Marilyn Deaton, 60, of New York dined almost exclusively on fat for a month and saw some improvement in her Parkinson's symptoms. The results, included modest improvements in balance, tremors and mood.
The lady goes on a diet, loses 26lbs in weight and improves her Parkinson's Disease. What is this wonder diet?

Background

R efined sugars (e.g., sucrose, fructose) were absent in the diet of most people until very recently in human history. Today overconsumption of diets rich in sugars contributes together with other factors to drive the current obesity epidemic. Overconsumption of sugar-dense foods or beverages is initially motivated by the pleasure of sweet taste and is often compared to drug addiction. Though there are many biological commonalities between sweetened diets and drugs of abuse, the addictive potential of the former relative to the latter is currently unknown.

Stretching - Good Or Bad?

Thoughts On Stretching

I stretch. I have no proof it helps, but I feel good with a post-workout stretch, as opposed to no-stretch. I stretch and hold for 20 seconds, as generally recommended in exercise books and published papers.

I still have unresolved issues regarding stretching. I read several articles on stretching, the general consensus being its beneficial, but with no degree of certainty and some doubt.

Instinctively and intuitively I know stretching is good, but I don't have the scientific evidence to back this view.

The World Turned Upside Down: The Second Low-Carbohydrate Revolution

I Am Reading

If you want a well thought out comprehensive case for going low-carb, read The World Turned Upside Down: The Second Low-Carbohydrate Revolution.

Richard David Feinman is Professor of Cell Biology at State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY.

As a biochemist Dr Feinman has a better understanding of the intricate workings of the body's complex systems, than most medical doctors.

Prof Feinman argues the case against carb consumption and its deleterious effects on health. He also disassembles the case against eating saturated fats.

Phytic Acid In Food

What is phytic acid and why should I care?

P hytic acid is the storage form of phosphorus found in many plants, contained in the bran or shell of grains, nuts and seeds. Herbivores easily digest phytic acid, but humans cannot.

What does phytic acid do?

Phytic acid binds to minerals and prevents them being absorbed into the body. These include iron, zinc, magnesium, copper, etc. We easily absorb minerals when phytic acid is not present. Phytic acid also interferes with certain enzymes such as pepsin and trypsin.

What should I do?

Minimise consumption of beans, legumes, grains, nuts and seeds. This will allow the body to fully absorb the minerals present in foods. Nuts and seeds both contain much higher levels than either grains or beans.

Do Not Stretch While Cold

Warning!

S tretch after exercise. Not before. At the end of exercise, while your muscles are hot, supple, elastic, flooded with blood, oxygen and nutrients. Stretch.

I read Doug McGuff's book, Body-By-Science, a few months back, in which he does not recommend stretching. McGuff explains that stretching does not improve strength. I like McGuff and I like his work. I disagree with him on this one.

McGuff may be correct, it will not improve strength, but I reckon it will improve flexibility.

I followed McGuff recos for about a year, doing High Intensity Training, to failure. I still train to failure each session at the gym. I now stretch at the end of each workout. I do 30 to 45 minute on machines, then 15 minutes of stretches. Stretching has made a huge difference to post workout and flexibility.

Muscle Protein Breakdown After Resistance Exercise

O n training forums, there are questions and recommendations on the amount and timing of protein intake. Much of it, I take to be hearsay, speculative and anecdotal.

The findings in the study below, indicate that muscle protein breakdown and synthesis does NOT occur 60 minutes after resistance exercise. It appears to start 180 minutes or more after exercise.

Much of the talk and recommendations of taking high protein shakes and meals immediately before, during and after a workout, seem to be unfounded and misplaced.

Addicted To Milk And Wheat

The Addictive Opioids In Wheat And Dairy Foods

D airy and wheat products contain opioid peptides influencing endorphin receptors in the brain. These peptides are physically addictive, causing asthma, obesity, apathy, dependence, ignorance and numbness. The same goes for beta-carbolines in prepared food.

To be sharp and investigative, you ought to consume neither dairy- nor wheat-products. You don’t need those ‘foods’ at all.

To obtain all required nutrients and to remain sharp and investigative; consume as much fruits (there are about 6000 different fruits), and some fresh raw animal food regularly (like sashimi or egg yolk). And for munch-food; only consume what you really, really love to eat (and not because they say it’s healthy), containing little protein, but much fat and / or sugar, satisfying your cravings for munch-food.

Wheat- and dairy-products are not foods but drugs.

1 Tbsp Sugar
2 Tbsp Cayenne

2 Tbsp Chili Powder
2 Tbsp Garlic Powder
